Cifra nova Indiae Orientalis: new cryptographic systems and secrets in the correspondence with the East Asia (XVI-XVII)

Among the European cryptographic systems of the Modern Age, the Cifra nova Indiae Orientalis (1601), a recovered manuscript held at the Royal Academy of History in Madrid and composed by the secretary of the Society of Jesus, Bernardo de Angelis, is the last cipher key which the Jesuit superiors used during the last years of their expulsion from Japan. This research analyses the evolution of Asian pasigraphy in the 16th and 17th centuries and attempts to examine some historical circumstances in which the Cifra nova, hitherto unpublished codex, was used through the Jesuit missives.
