Abstract

The article aims to give an overview of the historical development of the socalled 'Colegios de Doctrinos' or 'Colegios de Niños de la Doctrina Cristiana': veritable institutions of succour and social re-education which populated the Spanish landscape in the 16th and 17th centuries. The localization of new archive documents permits the origin of the 'Colegios' to be identified as Valladolid in 1542, in close connection with the application of the 1540 Tavera Law on the provision of poor relief. The figures of Juan de Lequeitio (or Lequetio) and Gregorio de Pesquera stand out as founders and propagators of the institution in a number of cities, and the importance of the former's personal links with San Juan de Avila (Saint John of Avila), who encouraged the spread of the 'Colegios' through his writings and foundations, is highlighted. An appendix to the article carries a transcription of three basic documents ( two of which are unpublished).
