Abstract


Reacting to foreign criticism, in the late 18th century, Spaniards felt a need to revindicate the Spanish past with a nationalistic discourse. Within this context history of art became an important ground for debate. As a result, Velázquez and Murillo were raised to the status of timeless paradigms.
