This article studies the reactions of the South American countries vis-à-vis the Spanish American War, both at the official and non-official level. Also the existing views about the projection of the «98» on the South American collective representations are revisited, through the analysis of the ideological environment that contextualized the war and the associated ideological and symbolical processes. It is argued here that the visualization of the war as the confrontation between two different and rival races —Latins and Anglosaxons— opened the way in South America to the reformulation of the Hispanic potentialities for progress.
