The present study analizes a survey conducted to investigate the ploughing up of common lands which had been carried out to the detriment of the Mesta in the first half of the seventeenth century. But it also suggests an approach to the document from the point of view of the textual analysis, based on the value of statistics as a metatext, throuhg which it is possible to evaluate the political and historical significance of quantitative data, and comment on the nature of government in the Age of Enlightenment.
