The article discusses the important role played by the peasants of Guipuzcoa in the Later Middle Ages in the struggle against their lords and the steps which put them on the path to freedom. First, a series of examples of the social condition of the bond men and their successful struggle for the abolition of personal services is offered. The existing social conflicts in rural Guipuzcoa are then studied within the so-called Lucha de bandos. The article concludes with an examination of the early phases of universal hidalguía which encompassed all inhabitants of Guipuzcoa in the 16th Century.
