Abstract

From the viewpoint of Catalonia the article seeks to deepen our understanding of the various State projects existing in the Spain of the liberal revolution, specifically that of the federal republic, and some historical constants which made the construction of the Spanish nation difficult. Beyond the federalist project, whose direct link with later Catalan nationalism is investigated, the reasons for the attempts of various kinds of «separation» of Catalonia are analysed, as well as the tensions existing with the central authority, and its relationship with the recovery of an historical memory of self-government, which must not be interpreted in the light of cultural and political preoccupations arising subsequently.
