This article aims at analyzing the lexemes corresponding to the seme «despair» in Alfonso the Learned s «Séptima Partida» in order to study the articulations, images and meanings involved. These articulations go beyond the idea of despair/suicide (traditional in the medieval world) and include assassination and apostasy (in particular, muladism). The article seeks a general interpretation of the textes conception of despair, with particular focus on the conditions needed for the criminalization of suicide in medieval law.
