The «officium palatinum» lies at the heart of political power in the Visigothic kingdom of Toledo. We describe its components and function, with particular attention to thouse offices open to the aristocracy, in which its members could fulfil a personal «cursus honorum», from lower or junior ranks to the high «officium» of «dux», underlining the continuity of some late Roman administrative traditions. However, this political body is in many ways beyond the king's control and we should not consider it as a comfortable inner circle of selected royal bureaucrats.
