Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • I've read Editorial CSIC's Good Practice Code and comply with all its guidelines.
  • The Authorship, good publication practice and copyright transfer statement is filled and signed, and it'll be added to the submission.
  • The article has not been previously published, in whole or any of its parts, in other language. Therefore, I declare it has not been sent to another journal for consideration.
  • The submission is an original work and does not violate the copy and reproduction rights of other authored works. If necessary, the authors has permit for the reproduced work.
  • The person making the submission has been authorized by all the article authors to submit and act as their spokesperson in front of the journal during the review, editing and publishing processes.
  • Each of the authors has been identified including the following data:
    - Given name (in full form) and family name(s).
    - Email contact address.
    - Country of professional activity.
    - Institutional affiliation.
    - Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCID).
    - Role/roles according to the CRediT taxonomy.
  • The text adheres to the length, format, references, citation of figures, tables and equations (if applicable), and bibliography requirements outlined in the journal guidelines.
  • TWO files of the article are sent. The first should contain the text of the manuscript in a Microsoft Word compatible file. If the manuscript contains tables or figures, these should be sent in separate files saved in a single compressed ZIP or RAR file, as detailed below in the section "Tables and figures". Likewise, a second anonymised PDF file will be sent containing both the text of the article and the tables and figures, if any, in their corresponding place. This PDF will be used in the external review. Therefore, it will exclude all those elements that allow the identification of the authors both in the text (name and affiliation, CRediT role/roles, self-citations, personal notes, etc.) and in the metadata of the file (check the "Properties" of the file). It is permissible to cite the author's own publications, as long as it is done in the same terms as the other citations, without additions such as "as I have stated in my article X...", without works in press, etc. Any credit and acknowledgement notes should be completely removed. For the removal of metadata you can use specific software or one of the many free tools available on the internet.

JOURNAL PUBLICATION FORMATS

HISPANIA is an open access electronic publication. Articles will be published online in HTML, XML and PDF and will be made available to readers, without restrictions, immediately after online publication. CSIC reserves the right to distribute the full issues for sale as an ebook either as PDF, ePUB or any other electronic format, and/or in print-on-demand format.

CONTENT

1. Articles: Original research papers. They will be reviewed by a "double-blind" system (see Review Procedure).

2. Critical studies: Articles of historiographical nature that analyse two or more recent works on the same subject, or a current, trend or ongoing debate. The approach should be non-descriptive, but analytical, discussing the most innovative ideas that have emerged in a given historiographical field. Before submitting the text, the author will send the journal a proposal for a critical study, explaining briefly the interest of the chosen topic and/or the works to be studied. They will be subject to reviewing by a "double-blind" system, as the articles (see Review Procedure).

3. Reviews: Hispania commissions renowned specialists to provide critical reviews of as many works as it deems appropriate. Under no circumstances will reviews be accepted on the initiative of the reviewers. They must be agreed and commissioned in advance by the Editorial Board. The journal welcomes proposals for works to be reviewed by sending a copy of the work. On occasion, publishers will be asked for works considered significant from a historiographical point of view. Priority will be given to the critique of the work rather than a summary of its content. Hispania reserves the right to publish or not the reviews commissioned once they have been received.

4. Monographic sections: Hispania publishes monographic sections consisting of between three and five articles on the same topic, with a brief introduction by the coordinator. Given the large number of proposals it receives, Hispania will make an annual call for monographic sections (between March and May), which the Editorial Board will consider together, and from which it will select a maximum of three for the following year. If accepted, the coordinator will be notified so that he/she can begin the process of submitting the articles, the reviewing of which will be governed by the same rules as the other articles in the journal.

REVIEW PROCEDURE

Works published by HISPANIA must strictly adhere to the journal's guidelines. If they do not, they will be rejected on submission. Only original works that have not been published in full or in part in any language before and that are not under evaluation in other journals will be accepted. The texts must follow the rules specified in the "Good Practice Code" available on the journal's website: hispania.revistas.csic.es. Authors must fill and sign the "Authorship, good publication practice and copyright transfer statement", also available at the aforementioned web address. The articles must mention the sources of funding (name of the project, code or reference, developed name of the funding body), if any. The originals received are subject to a two-stage review process:

  1. The Editorial Board assesses whether the work meets the formal requirements, whether the contents are in line with the editorial line of the journal, and whether it meets the minimum quality standards in terms of structure and content that allow it to be submitted for external review.
  2. If the work is considered to be evaluable, it will be reviewed by two external reviewers, using a "double blind" system. In view of the external reports, which are of a consultative, non-binding nature, the Editorial Board will decide whether or not to publish the work. If necessary, the suggestions for revision will be sent to the authors so that they can make the appropriate modifications. The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject the article if it considers that the review does not meet the requirements.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

1. LANGUAGES

Hispania publishes works in the majority languages of its scientific field, subject to approval by the Editorial Board.

2. PREPARATION OF THE MANUSCRIPT

The text of the manuscript should be sent in a Microsoft Word compatible fil, in addition to the above-mentioned "Authorship, good publication practice and copyright transfer statement". Therefore, it will exclude all those elements that allow the identification of the authors both in the text (name and affiliation, self-citations, personal notes, etc.) and in the metadata of the file (check the "Properties" of the file).

Extension: For articles, between 10,000 and 12,000 words, including text, notes, and final bibliography. For critical studies, between 5,000 and 10,000 words. For reviews, the maximum length will be 2,000 words.

Title: The title should be explicit and precise, clearly reflecting its content.

Text: The identified manuscript must be preceded by a sheet containing the title of the paper in Spanish and English, the author's name, institutional affiliation, academic status, postal and e-mail address and telephone number, as well as his/her personal ORCID identifier. A second page will again contain the title in Spanish and English, the author's name and institutional affiliation, an abstract of a maximum of 150 words, in Spanish and English, together with five keywords, also in Spanish and English. Finally, and before going on to the text of the article, the source or sources of funding (name of the project, code or reference, developed name of the funding body), if any, must be mentioned.

Style: The writing should be clear and concise. For texts in Spanish, the rules and recommendations of the Real Academia Española and the Asociación de Academias de la Lengua Española will be followed with regard to grammar and spelling. Hispania retains the right to introduce style corrections in the texts in order to adapt them to its editorial standards and to the nature of the journal. In case of disagreement with the author, the journal's criteria will prevail.

Composition: The document must contain the minimum essential formatting elements, avoiding the use of justifications, indentations, different typefaces or several Word styles. Only Times New Roman font should be used, at 12 points for the main text, 11 for long quotations and 10 for footnotes. The text should be numbered in Arabic numerals, in the location preferred by the author.

Headings: A maximum of three levels of headings will be used. CAPITAL LETTERS AND BOLD for the first level; lower case and bold for the second level; lower case, bold and italic for the third level. Headings should not be numbered in Arabic or Roman numerals.

Literal quotations: They must be placed between double high inverted commas (" "). If the quotation is longer than two lines, it will be written in 11 point size, indented on the left, with a blank line before and after, and without inverted commas. Omission of part of the text of the quotation should be indicated by (...).

Italics: Italics should be used only for words in a language other than the main language of the article. Bold or italics should not be used for emphasis or figurative meaning (e.g.: ... a supposedly "democratic" party...). If emphasis is essential, double inverted commas should be used, but this is best avoided.

Special characters:
- Text between hyphens: only long hyphens (alt+0151) should be used.
- The percent sign (%) shall always be preceded by a space (e.g. 25 %).
- Units of thousands may be indicated consistently throughout the text. Years are not punctuated.
- Use "See" instead of "Cf" or "Cfr".
- Abbreviations with º or ª have a full stop after the letter: (n.º = number; M.ª = María).
- Words in a language other than the main language are in italics, but if it is a literal quotation it should be in roman type and between inverted commas, like other quotations.

Notes: Notes should be footnoted and numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Inside the text, the note call should be placed at the end of the sentence and always before the punctuation mark. If it is a textual quotation, it should be placed after the closing inverted comma and before the full stop, comma, etc.

Abbreviations and Acronyms: In the text, the first time an abbreviation or acronym is used, it must be developed and accompanied by its key. E.g.: Dir. (Director); ... militants of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español (PSOE), which ...

Bibliographical references: They will always be in footnote, in abbreviated Author-Year format, consisting of surname or surnames of the author/s in lower case + year of publication, pages. E.g.: Rodríguez 2014. González, Gutiérrez and Mañach 1991, 82-99. If a volume or volume should be cited: Jiménez Pidal 1915, vol. 1, 65-43.

Quotations from different authors should be separated by a full stop: Olivera Gutiérrez 1992, 20-49. López Hoyos 2006, 23-45. Quotations from different works by the same author are separated by a semicolon, avoiding repeating the author's surname: Olivera Gutiérrez 1999, 37-79; 2001; 2006, 3-45. If there is more than one work by the same author and year, they are distinguished by adding a letter to the year: Olivera Gutiérrez 1994a, 60-99; 1994b, 2-35.

Bibliography List: This should contain the full citation of all scholarly works mentioned in the text. Any work that cannot be considered a scholarly publication should not be included, as these will be considered as sources (see Citation of Primary Sources). Bibliography should be listed alphabetically by author's surname and year of publication, adding a letter if there is more than one title per author and year. Hispania citation system is based on Chicago 17th ed. author-date, as explained in the Bibliography Citation Format document.

Citation of Primary Sources: All primary sources cited must be correctly referenced in footnotes, but not in the final Bibliography. For example, citations of articles from daily, weekly or non-scientific press will appear only in the footnotes, in this format: Surname or surnames, first name, title of the article in inverted commas, name of the newspaper in italics, city of edition (only the first time it is cited), number, date and pages. E.g.: López, Paz, "La República vive", El Sol, Santiago de Chile, 43, 12/7/1899: 10-11. For the rest of the sources, the title of the document (if it has one) will be cited in italics and the place and date of the document in roman type, the name of the archive followed by the city where it is located, and then, in brackets, the acronym by which it will be cited in the following notes, fund, section, file, dossier, page. Ex:. Carta del marqués de Someruelos al secretario de Estado español, Santiago de Chile, 16 de octubre de 1804, Archivo Histórico Nacional, Madrid (AHN), Estado, leg. 6366, exp. 95, doc. 12, ms. 43, n.º 4, ff. 3-4. In the following notes, only AHN, Estado, leg. etc.

Tables and Figures: The number of tables and figures should be limited to what is strictly necessary to develop the argument of the study. The text elements (tables) should be in simple style, without bold or shading or ornamental elements. Each of them should be sent in separate Word files with the following headings: table_1, table_2, etc. Within the article text, the place where each table should appear should be indicated by placing, between two blank lines, the table number and its title, followed, after a full stop, by the source, origin, etc...

Table 3: Payments made by Benito Gálvez distribution by population. Source: Author's elaboration, based on Bendrane 2020.

Graphical elements (figures, maps, illustrations, etc.) may not exceed five and must be submitted in independent JPG or TIFF format files, which will always have the word figure followed by the figure number as its name: "figure_1.jpg", "figure_2.tiff", etc., saved in a single compressed ZIP or RAR file. Within the text, the ideal insertion point must be indicated by placing the figure number and the title of the figure between two blank lines, followed, after a full stop, by the source or any other additional information you wish to include.

3.- As you will see on the new submissions page, submitting a manuscript is a four-stage process, in addition to a final section with information on follow-up:

3.1.- "1. Start"

At this stage you must select the language in which the article is written and the section of the journal in which you think it would fit, you must indicate that you have prepared all the items on the "Submission requirements" list and, optionally, you may send comments to the editor. You must comply with the terms of the Copyright Statement and the collection and storage of your data as the author of the article in accordance with the Privacy Statement of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC).

Then press the "Save and continue" button.

3.2.- "2. Upload submission"

In this phase, the files that make up the article and its additional documentation will be uploaded to the management module.

There are three parts to upload each file. In the first one, we will select which component of the article we are going to contribute and we will upload the corresponding file. Once uploaded, click on the "Continue" button. In the second part we will see the file metadata, with the possibility to edit them, but we will click "Continue" without making this edition.

In the third part, select "Add Another File", going back to "1. Upload file" and, without modifying the default option "This is not a revision of an existing file", select the new "Article Component" identifying what it is and uploading the file. Click "Continue" until you reach, once again, step "3. Confirm". This process must be repeated until all the files have been sent, and only when all the material has been uploaded should the "Complete" button be selected.

If after "Completing" the submission we realise that we have forgotten to upload a file, we can do so by selecting the "Upload File" button located in the upper right-hand corner of the "2. Upload Submission" tab:

Once all the submission files have been uploaded, we will press the "Save and continue" button.

3.3.- "3. Enter Metadata"

In this phase the author will enter the metadata of the article according to the journal guidelines. These are:

- Title in Spanish and English. If the article is written in another language, it will be introduced first this language and then in English.

- Summary or abstract in the same languages as the previous item.

- List of contributors. Although it was not necessary when registering as a journal user, in this section it is compulsory for authors to have their ORCID identifier and affiliation correctly indicated. If necessary, the information of additional authors will be added using the link "Add contributor":

- Keywords. The article keywords will be inserted in both languages. The entire list cannot be copied, must be entered one term at a time pressing "Enter" after each one.

- Funding data. The entities that have supported the research published in the article must be indicated. After selecting "Add funder", the name of the funder should be inserted again, which will trigger an internal search that will return the institution standardised name and DOI. If the institution does not have a DOI, it will not be able to register in this field. After entering the grant numbers, click on "Save".

To finish this phase of entering metadata, click on the "Save and continue" button.

3.4.- "4. Confirmation" y "5. Next steps"

In this last phase we will confirm the submission metadata recording linked to the uploaded files. Before clicking on the "Finish Submission" button, we can go back to the previous phases and review the information and files provided to check that they are all correct.

Once we click on the "Finish Submission" button, the article will be sent to the journal and its staff will contact you to continue with the process, as indicated in the "5. Next Steps" section.

How to check a revision report and submit a revised version of a manuscript

Once your submission has been reviewed, the journal's staff will send you a review report. Once received, you must log in to the journal and, in the "Submissions" section of your dashboard, you will be able to check that your submission is in the Review phase and, if the editorial staff has requested, whether it is necessary to make any modifications or revisions to the manuscript:

By clicking on the title of your submission, you will be taken to the workflow of your submission and you will be able to check the information related to the its review. You will find the notifications that the editorial staff has sent you, the attachments that the reviewers may have attached and, if requested, the possibility to provide a new version of the manuscript with the requested modifications by clicking on the "Upload file" button:

Research data policy

We recommend authors depositing data obtained from the research developed for the preparation of their article in repositories of recognized prestige, specific to the discipline or of a generalist nature. In any case, it must be a FAIR repository (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), preferably in open access.

There are several repositories destined to conserve and disseminate concrete data such as results of surveys, observations, interviews, simulations, automatically collected data, samples, models ... If necessary, authors can consult the Registry of Research Data Repositories re3data taking into account that each repository has its own deposit rules.

Those CSIC authors who would like to deposit their datasets in Digital.CSIC may do so by following these guidelines. They can use the Servicio de Archivo Delegado made available by the Technical Office of DIGITAL.CSIC and the Red de Bibliotecas CSIC.

DIGITAL.CSIC generates DOIs for datasets and associated software and is certified as data repository in re3data and Repository Finder. More information at Política de datos en Digital.CSIC.

If the author has deposited datasets in a repository, he should mention it in the article providing a brief description of the type of data deposited, the name and URL of the repository, the identification code and the data of the license for use and distribution. This information must be included at the end of the article, immediately before the bibliographic listing, under the heading "Data availability".
