Resumen

Se han publicado muchas obras sobre el exilio republicano español. Sin embargo, faltan estudios sobre la aportación de los exiliados españoles al desarrollo del estudio del español en países no hispanohablantes. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo examinar el papel de estos exiliados en la difusión de los estudios hispánicos en el Reino Unido, así como su relación con el hispanismo institucional británico de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Amparados por hispanistas afines a la causa republicana, una parte importante de la élite intelectual que recaló en las islas británicas se empleó en la enseñanza del español y en actividades afines, contribuyendo a la difusión de la lengua y la cultura hispanas en diversos sectores de la sociedad británica. En esta línea destacamos la labor cultural del Instituto Español de Londres (1944-1950), referente para estudiosos de las letras hispánicas, y el alcance de su cometido entre el profesorado de español en el Reino Unido.
