This negotiation proves the importance of the Mediterranean area for spanish governments. In short, Spain was not isolated, his presence was decisive in the Mediterranean and this «european treaty» gave security to maintain the colonies in the Antilles, if the war started in Cuba changed in a conflict against the United States.
