This article is a contribution to the current debate on the problem of the «feudal mutationism» which has pervaded recent scholarship, particularly in France. The major contributions on this debate by Bois, Poly, Bournazel, Bonnasie, Barthélémy and others are critically reviewed. The author focuses on medieval Cataluña as an important case study for this problem. The formation and main characters of Catalunian feudal society are analyzed through the data of primary and secondary soruces.
