The author reviews the changes undergone in recent years in the study of the role of public opinion in international relations, paying attention both to French historiography and to Anglo-saxon social sciences, as well as the research on imagology posited by comparative literature in so far as they help to enlighten concepts that sometimes are confused such as «image» and «stereotype». In the last section of the paper the author tackles with a critical eye the problem of the influence of images and stereotypes both upon the formation of public opinion and that of the ruling elites, with reference to the importance of these subjects in the field of peace research (Friedensforschung). The aim is not to provide solutions to the problems but to criticize the banality or vagueness of many accepted conclussions in a specially complex and eminently interdisciplinary historiographic field.
