The results of the revolt of July 1854 brought about the constitution of a coalition government between «progresistas» and «moderados». The political, economic and social problems caused serious tenseness among the members of the coalition, provoking continuous changes in the government composition. The crisis of 1856 meant the definitive victory of the «moderados» leaded by Leopoldo O'Donell, as well as the imposition of the moderate political program, to which it had been added the economic reforms made during the «Bienio».
