The principal aim of this paper is to show how Spanish historiographical reflection is restricted in several ways. Firstly, in that reflection of history is never a speculative activity but a critical activity in progress. Secondly, in that, from this point of view, the Spanish panorama in general historiography is only seemingly negative, after a detailed analysis of the current situation in the designated fields of expertise: Prehistory, Ancient, Medieval, Modern and Contemporany History. Finally, in that the traditional critique of Spanish disjuncture, which is pertinent in some aspects, is being answered meanwhile by the new preoccupations with historical theory in the last generation of Spanish historians.
