This article takes as a starting point the arguments presented by Pablo Sánchez León in his contribution to this issue of Hispania in order to reflect on the relationships between market forces and institutional factors in shaping the patterns of urbanization of Spain between the sixteenth and the nineteenth centuries. Professor Ringrose distinguishes different regions inside Spain with varying dynamics and characteristic urbanization patterns, revises current interpretations on the effects of the crisis of the seventeeth century and extends to the end of the Old Regime the main trends in urbanization specific to this area of southern europe.
