This paper discusses the different meanings of the concept of «tributary mode of production» as elaborated by different authors and, particularly, by J. Haldon. By reasessing historical materialism´s main concepts, it attempts to bring to light the contradictory use that historiography has made of tributary relations, taking al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) as a case-study. These contradictions show the need for a wider definition of such relations which include relations of personal dependence.
