Abstract

One of the most important features of the Castilian silver currency (the famous «real») during the seventeenth century was its stability. This article studies the two main causes of this fact. First the monarchy opposed any devaluation because of its consequences on the fiscal system, and second, it was joined in this attitude by the commercial bourgeoisie of Seville, for whom devaluation would be detrimental to one of their principal activies at this time: the import trade.
