In the relationship between the papacy and the Crown of Aragon, the coronation of Peter II (1196-1213) by Pope Innocent III (1198-1216) on the Feast of St Martin 1204 was undoubtedly a very important event. Still, however, there remain many complicated questions concerning the ceremony and the reasons behind it. This article attempts to add information on the coronation in Rome, the political motives of the King and the Pope, and to suggest the long-term significance of the coronation.
