Ideas on gift in Western medieval society are presented as closely related to representation of the social link of caritas, in the sense of an spiritual love, driven by the Holy Spirit and inspired by God. A closely observation of the theological texts and practical modalities of well known gifts leads us to think that the gift-countergift pattern is less appropiate than the notion of a general exchange, which reveals a system of circulation grounded on «mutuus amor».
