Abstract

This paper emphasises the importance of the social basis and the symbolic representation of society in Franco´s dictatorship. This approach sees the period not just as the result of a preventive «counterrevolution», but also as the incarnation of a deeply reactionary and traditional idea of Spain, that lay at the center of the symbolic universe of many Spanish people, transcending social and territorial divisions. The analysis of the militants and the local chiefs of FET y de las JONS in the postwar, as well as the components of the municipal institutions in 1948, permits us to establish some conclusions regarding the social basis of the dictatorship.
