This article explores the interaction between liberal politics and the emergence of a distinctive Catalan identity in the mid-nineteenth century. In particular, it analyzes the complex relationship between a generalized notion of Spanish patriotism, inherent in various liberal initiatives within Catalonia, and the appearance of the rudiments of a new provincial patriotism, which expressed itself in various ways and possessed identifiable causes and roots.
