As the flood of Spanish emigration to other European countries developed, migration experienced a phase of crisis; the project underwent change as the possibilities of amassing savings were less than expected. In France, immigration policies facilitated longer stays. The Spanish adapted to this situation through associative activities, which brought together a fairly high proportion of Spaniards living there. Associations provided a space for socialization and a means of recreating the culture of origin. Some of them, furthermore, acquired a critical awareness of the emigrant condition.
