Abstract

This paper consists of an exhaustive study of a passage in the Chronicle of 754, which deals with the expedition by Abd Al-Malik lbn Qatan, Wali of Al-Andalus, to the region of the Pyrenees. We have come to the conclusion that this was in no way related to the well-known victory of Pelagius at Covadonga in the year 718. Rather, it indisputably concerns some incident that occurred in what we now call the Pyrenees and must be connected with the Walt's expedition against the Basques in year 115 of the Hegira (21 February 733 to 9 February 734), described by such Muslim authors as Ahmad Al-Razi, Ibn Al-Athir, Ibn Khaldun and Al-Maqqari.
