The real extent of electoral fraud during the Bourbon Restoration in the province of Valencia

Much has been written about the electoral fraud during the Restoration regime in Spain, and it seems that it has been taken for granted. However, no bottom-up analysis of the matter has been done that could check the real impact of these aspects in the elections; whether they decide the results or not; and what is more, if the iniquities, if there were any, could be amended by the correspondent administrations. This article attempts to answer all these questions. To do so, all election protests raised by the Provincial Electoral Commission plus all the considerations done by the correspondent body between 1890 and 1923 have been scrutinized and analyzed. The geographical area of study chosen has been Valencia for it is an excellent example of how the whole country behaved in electoral terms. The conclusions reached are striking, and clearly show, at least in the elections analyzed, whether the fraudulent practices determined the results or not.
