Abstract


This article analyses the influence of the antiquity collections, particularly sculptures, brought from Rome and Naples to Spain during the XVIIIth century relationship between the Spanish monarchy and the Italian states. They contributed to the diffusion of classical ideas in Spain and the formation of painters and scultors. It also studies their reception in the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, in Madrid, and their use by the artists on the royal service. Moreover it pays attention to the contribution of Spanish travellers to Italy in the better knowlodge of hispanic antiquities and discuss the play roled by Pompeya and Herculano excavations in the neoclassical art.
