The middle of the Seventeenth Century was the last period in which the Habsburgs of Madrid tried to maintain their hegemony. In this context, the rebelions of Catalonia and Portugal in 1640 caused the most important crisis in the Hispanic Monarchy. The importance of the Portuguese dominions for the spanish empire forced to Philip IV to try to recover it. The shortage of resources and a wrong strategy —the obsesion to repeat the succes of Philip II in 1580— were the causes of the defeat, transcendental for the Habsburg and Europe.
