Abstract

The Central Empires in front of the progressive deterioration of relations between Spain and the United States. Upon the basis of large archivistical and hemerographic documents of German, Austrian and Spanish origin, in this article the author explains how the German and Austrian diplomacy observed and judged the increasing deterioration of the Spanish-Northamerican relations, which suffered several fluctuations from the arrival of liberal party to the government, at the beginning of October 1897, till the explosion of «Maine», about the middle of February 1898; and which had foreseen as imminent a military confrontantion between both countries. Most especially, the author analyzes the attitude of German and Austrian dirigents in front of the Spanish claim to obtain a joint diplomatic démarche of the European great powers against the increasing interventionist politics of the USA in the Cuban question, as a last resource to avoid a contigent struggle between Spain and the United States.
