This essay attempts to review Spanish historiography of contemporary history over the course of the last twenty-five years. Instead of insisting on the natural thematic and bibliographical accumulation that accompanies the growth of the discipline, the author proposes above all to consider the methodological transformations and the outside inspirations and influences —the borrowings— and at the same time to show the results of this quarter century. It should be understood that only in this way is it possible to detect current shortocomings and to evaluate current achievements.
