Antonio Alcalá Galiano (1789-1865), well-known thinker and politician of the conservative party, offered one of the most lucid conservative perspectives on the recent past in his writings on Spanish history and European thought. Moreover, his articles, papers, speeches and books not only analyze political affairs, but also show his interest in methodological questions. The historian´s involvement in his work, the critical use of sources, and his holistic idea of history as the history of civilization are the most conspicuous of these methodological questions. With regard to political aspects, Alcalá Galiano was particularly interested in the traumatic years before the introduction of representative government in Spain, manifestations of paricularism and revolutions.
