After an introductory contextualisation, the central core of this article deals mainly with the formation of the Olózaga government and its fall in 1843. This is a practically unknown chapter in the political history of liberalism during the reign of Isabel II which is of particular importance because it throws light on the thinking and the political attitude of Olózaga as the main progressive leader. The article also seeks to provide clues to enable a greater understanding of Spanish progressivism in the period before the beginning of the «moderate decade».
