When from 1564 onwards the saltworks of Añana started to produce for the Crown, their owners were forced to pay the king an annual tribute for the use of the brines admitted as an ius regalia of the monarchy: the diezmo-señor or tenth. From that moment onwards, everything concerning with the making and sale of salt was organised around it. In this article, some of the characteristics of this unusual levy which survived until till the XXth Century will be analysed.
