The selection of students in Spanish universities by means of an entrance exam was a measure deemed necessary by the Institutionists (scholars and intellectuals associated with the Institución Libre de Enseñanza) in order to reform the obsolete assessment method observed in the Faculties. In addition, it was intended to improve the seriousness of studies and the homogeneity of students. Following these recommendations, several statutes were enacted by successive ministers, between 1898 and 1902, to introduce an exam of this type. This paper analyses the genesis, application and repeal of these norms in the context of the educational reform undertaken after the colonial defeat of 1898 and against the background of the social conflict and the student protest that arose in Spain around the turn of the century.
