The emergence of authorial rights meant legal and social recognition for intellectual work in the eighteenth century. Therefore, the study of the rights of authorship and intellectual property is important in understanding the economic situation of authors and editors. At the same time, these elements are also important for the history of publishing because we can study editors as businessmen once intellectual property became a type of commercial property. This article aims to analyse this process in Spain, addressing different questions such as legislation, the attitude of authors and editors, and the development of professional associations for the defence of their rights.
