Abstract

This paper focuses on a particular example in the medieval evolution of the watermill in Castile, that of the medieval watermills belonging to the patrimony of a Poor Clares monastery in the village of Alcocer, in the Castillan region of the Alcarria. From the description both of the technical and socio-economic circumstances of the Poor Clares watermills, we can draw interesting conclusions about the social implantation of medieval watermills in the same area, as well as some useful details about the development of the region’s agrarian economy.
