This article describes the creation of King Alfonso XIH's image during the first years of his reign. Several factors were at work in the process: criticism of the parliamentary regime and demands for a stronger executive, the influence of the court, the king´s education and his personality, and the projection of his figure as a national symbol above political disputes. The article also analyses how his image contributed to increasing his intervention in political affairs, how it helped to put a brake on proposals for democratising the regime and, especially, how it played a role in breaking the system of rotation between parties, dominant in the preceding years.
