Taking Galicia as case-study, this article analyses Maurismo as a political movement (1914-1923). Maurismo is examined in relation to the transformation of Galician society and politics during the first decades of the twentieth century. Although it maintained significant traces of the political culture of the period of the ‘Restauración’, Maurismo is interpreted here as an attempt to adapt Conservatism to a changing context. Particular attention is paid to the ways in which the maurist ranks responded to the National Question and the Land Question in Galicia, and to their connections to social movements such as Social Catholicism.
